This riveting novel of adventure is based on a true story, one of the most daring hijacking exploits in recent history, which, despite the conviction of over a score of men and women for alleged complicity, continues to baffle both the Italian police and Interpol. When the Allies landed in Italy during the last war, Mussolini’s vast personal treasure, consisting of four tons of gold, millions in currency and jewels, and some of the most important Government archives, was moved north in a German S.S. convoy. As the convoy neared the Liguarian coast, it vanished. It has never been recovered. Desmond Bagley has cleverly reconstructed this coup and devised an ingenious fiction about the treasure’s fate and an attempt, years afterwards, by a group of men in the know to get hold of it and smuggle it out of Italy. For this purpose, a successful Cape Town boat-builder designs an ocean-going yacht and sails to the Mediterranean, aided and abetted by a South African, and an Englishman, both former P.O.W.’s in Italy. Between them, they have evolved a technically ingenious plan. To reach the treasure proves difficult enough; to get it out of Italy and dispose of it is even worse, especially since the Italian Government, a group of former partisans led by a ruthless and beautiful Contessa, and a piratically inclined British smuggler are all hot on the trail. The fate of the yacht and her crew is charted with breathtaking skill and suspense, and without revealing the outcome, it can be safely said that Desmond Bagley’s sea chase across the Mediterranean puts him straight into the great narrative tradition of those who write of small boats on big seas.

The old brass tray which had lain around the Devon farmhouse of the Wheales for centuries was considered of no account — until it was exhibited in a local museum and found to be of pure gold and of great archeological value. A photograph in the local paper started a rush of bidders from America. In the midst of the bidding came sudden, violent death. The tray was one of a pair, which together held the key to the Vivero Letter, written four hundred years before by a Spanish conquistador held captive in Yucatán by the fearsome Mayas. Ownership of the letter, which promises unimaginable riches to whoever can discover the secret of the twin trays, is disputed by two rival archaeologists. Spurred by the need to avenge a senseless murder, young Jeremy Wheale decides to take a hand. He persuades the archaeologists to join forces in a search for the lost Mayan city which Manuel de Vivero so glowingly described. Also seeking it, for the sake of the treasure it is alleged to contain, is a powerful underworld character who finds ready allies in the cut-throat convict labour force which roams the jungle armed with guns and machetes. In the ensuing clash amid the perils of the dense Mexican rain-forest in which a lost civilization lies hidden, Desmond Bagley employs all his outstanding narrative skill and authentic background knowledge to create a new high level in the thrilling adventure stories which have made him the best-seller he is.

The setting of High Citadel is the towering peaks of the Andes. A non-scheduled passenger plane is hi-jacked in mid-air and forced down among the forbidding mountains. The surviving passengers, stranded at 16,000 feet, embark on a perilous descent — only to find themselves trapped by a formidably armed Communist force whose prey is one particular passenger, the ex-president of Cordillera, and his lovely niece. But it soon becomes clear that the ambushers are intent on wiping out all the other survivors as well: “dead men tell no tales.” As the trapped men and women grimly realise the odds at stake, two intensely exciting stories unfold. On the lower slopes, a desperate delaying action is fought with ingeniously contrived weapons. At the same time, three of the men set out to brave the higher regions of the rock and glacier in a gruelling race for help. The climax, as unexpected as it is hair-raising, brings a wonderful at at times deeply moving adventure — thriller to a worthy close.

In a sense, Bob Boyd was born at the age of 23 — the day a terrible car crush completely erased all memory of his previous life. Recovery had been a slow grim struggle and in the years since Boyd, following the advice of the hospital psychiatrist, had successfully suppressed all curiosity about the man he once was. Until, in a small timber town in British Columbia he is jolted by a name — Trinavant. Sluggishly, echoes from the dead past strike a disturbing chord. Boyd begins to make enquiries and in so doing disturbs a deadly hornet’s nest. The powerful Matterson family, for whom he is doing a land survey as part of a dam-building project, have spent years obliterating all memory of the Trinavant name. They will certainly not tolerate the determined probing of one footloose geologist — as Boyd discovers when he becomes the quarry in a murderous manhunt. Not are the Mattersons in any mood to listen to Boyd’s expert warnings of impending disaster, for the almost completed dam is built on an unstable geological strata and the whole community is threatened. This tremendously tense drama of one man’s battle against unscrupulous local interests and Boyd’s search for his lost identity is Desmond Bagley’s most trilling novel yet, its impressive magnitude matched only by the rugged grandeur of the wild Canadian background.

The Mangans, having fought on the losing side of the American War of Independence, sail to the Bahamas, where they settle and prosper. Several generations later, Tom Mangan is the affluent proprietor of a number of luxury hotels, whose future looks even brighter with the injection of fifty million dollars provided by a well-heeled Texan family. The day Mangan clinches the deal with his friend, Bill Cunningham, should be the happiest day of his life, but a family tragedy followed by a series of misfortunes and disasters eventually leads him to suspect a conspiracy to ruin him, or, perhaps, something even more horrifying
